Can the latest Apple TV be connected to a TV with DVI instead of HDMI?

The TV in my Mom's living room was purchased in 2004 and only has 1 DVI port. I was thinking about getting my Mom an Apple TV for her birthday because she would like to stream Netflix movies and rent others without having to keep borrowing my Wii. I realize that there are HDMI to DVI splitters, but I know that certain devices do not support it. Has anyone successfully done it?
